WHO ARE WE?

DE KOERIER VAN NAVARRA

IN MEMORY OF THE HISPANOFLAMENCOS

‘De Koerier van Navarra’ means ‘mensajero’ or courier of Navarra. A poetical allusion to the ancient postline between Burgos and Brussels, crossing the Pyrenees in Navarra. A symbol of the historical link between northern Europe and Spain.
Carlos Primero of Spain was Charles the Fifth of Austria, Germany and the Low Lands. He was born in Flanders and died in Castilia. Both nations remained unified for almost two centuries. The echo lingers on. Driven by poverty after the religious wars during the sixteenth and seventeenth century, many Flemings went to Spain to work as artists, craftsmen or soldiers (Pérez-Reverte). They are remembered as ‘Hispanoflamencos’ or Flemish Spaniards. Their story is the main theme of our one-hour visit to the beguinage of Leuven from Wednesday till Saturday on reservation. Demonstration of authentic ‘arroz a la marinera’ on request every day from six persons on: 016/23.84.16
